OPD came into being by Dr Ancell stepping outside the field of Dentistry as an observer of what others do to treat their patients.
Many times he would subject himself to those very treatments to gain a better understanding of what was being offered. Coupling this experience with what was happening to his own patients when utilising those modalities in conjunction with often very traditional dental treatments he began to notice patterns that resulted in a new way of providing TMJ unloading, a new way of specifying mandibular position for the airway and new ways of encouraging oro-facial orthopaedic development.
