The amazing process of breathing. Something most of us take for granted yet so esential for our existence, for our survival.
In this TED ED talk by Emma Bryce, is explained how the transport of oxygen to the body's cells allow the functionality of it to remain while also while also clearing your system of the carbon dioxide that this work generates.
In this talk Emma Bryce takes us into the lungs to investigate how they help keep us alive.
When you breathe, you transport oxygen to the body’s cells to keep them working, while also clearing your system of the carbon dioxide that this work generates. How do we accomplish this crucial and complex task without even thinking about it? Emma Bryce takes us into the lungs to investigate how they help keep us alive.

Breathe to Heal
We would like to share something we encounter in our patients often and it's the importance or breathing. People underestimate the immense power of breathing and this becomes a crucial part of the way they live and handle life.
With anxiety, stress, and sleep dysfunction skyrocketing around the globe, it's time we look at the unspoken reasons why. These debilitating challenges can be meaningfully impacted with ten to twenty minutes of breathing exercises per day. Max Strom, who has taught breath-work for 20 years, reveals his insights into the healing power of the breath.
Max Strom teaches personal transformation, mindfulness, and yoga worldwide and is known for inspiring and impacting the lives of his students. His Inner Axis method addresses the internal aspects of our life and our potential for physical and emotional healing. He is the author of "A Life Worth Breathing," and, "There is No App for Happiness."

What Happens When you Breathe through your Mouth and not by the Nose
This is one of the best videos we have found that explain what happens with mouth breathers. We see it all the time in our practice.
If your child is a mouth breather you do need to see a Dentist/Doctor/Ear Nose and Throat specialist as soon as possible to see if you can change it back to the correct nasal breathing.
Read more about what we can do to help and give us a call 0293635690 or email us to discuss further our approach to your health.

Diaphragmatic Breathing Technique
Breathe in slowly and deeply so that you feel your belly rise under your hand. You may also notice your lower rib cage move wide under your other hand – remember the focus is upon keeping the upper chest muscles relaxed and using the diaphragm to breathe. This technique can be cued by thinking to “breathe into the belly”.
Breathe out by letting the rib cage fall back to resting. You should feel a gentle rise and fall of your belly under your hand.

Woollahra Dental Practice - Dr. Anthony Ancell
Dr Anthony Ancell, principal dentist at Woollahra Dental Practice has developed the OPD .
OPD (Ortho Postural Dentistry) Model.
Incorporating innovation, knowledge and experience to deliver a higher level of patient well-being.
It is Dr Ancell's experience that many patients simply cannot achieve vibrant health without the input of a variety of Allied Health Practitioners from the full spectrum of those medical fields that have evolved over the ages of man. One has to ask WHY these various fields of activity exist and are maintained over time.
Ortho-Postural Dentistry brings together years of research and understanding from the fields of sports medicine, neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory and whole body physiology and chronic pain treatment. The philosophy is based on rehabilitation of injured tissues, including worn teeth, with a view to restoring optimal function.
The system of treatment is based on aligning the skeletal system, which in turn results in a balanced muscular relationship. Minimal wear and stress to the supporting structures is therefore achieved.

Breathing Techniques to Improve Your Performance
With the Sydney running festival coming up we would like to share an article by Lynn Burgess from active.com about breathing techniques to improve your performance.
The way you breathe has a lot to do with your athletic performance as well as your quality of life. Breathing powerfully affects every system in your body (cardiovascular, nervous, endocrine, lymph, immune, digestive, and of course, respiratory).
Breathing properly can decrease stress and muscle tension; calm your nerves; sharpen your focus; minimize negative and distracting thoughts; reduce fatigue; and promote stamina. Unfortunately, proper breathing is often an overlooked component of athletic training.
If you watch a baby breathe, you will see the infant's belly rise and fall with each breath. Most probably stopped breathing this way long ago. Our cultural upbringing, suck in that gut, and the development of bad habits, like slouching, have resulted in shallow breathing or chest breathing. Compared to diaphragmatic breathing or belly breathing, chest-breathing results in increased heart and breathing rates. Shallow breathing can make your neck and shoulder muscles tense and activate your body's stress response.
The good news is that with a little training, you can learn, or relearn, a simple way of breathing that can transform your health and athletic performance.
After the race or anytime you would like to reduce tension and stress and enter into a calmer state of mind and body, shift into slow, abdominal breathing for a minute or two. Eventually, breathing with your diaphragm instead of your chest will become natural—as natural as breathing.
Doctor Anthony Ancell with his own technique - Ortho-Postural Dentistry - brings together years of research and understanding from the fields of sports medicine, neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory and whole body physiology and chronic pain treatment. Practice Diaphragmatic Breathing
- Sit upright in a chair, or lie down on the floor with your knees bent. Close your eyes and visualize your shoulders melting away from your ears.
- Place the hand that you write with beneath your navel and the other hand just above your navel.
- Breathe in deeply through your nose into your hand just below your navel. Allow this area to fill like a balloon. Next, feel your rib cage, where your other hand is, expand as the middle portion of the lungs are filled. Finally, fill the upper third of the lungs.
- Exhale slowly, contracting your belly as you breathe out.
- Keep your focus on each inhale and exhale.
- Repeat for five to 10 minutes and then go about your regular workout.
- Slow, rhythmic diaphragmatic breathing gives you a feeling of relaxed energy. During times of stress, like before the start of a race, notice any tension in your shoulders, neck, or jaw. Try to relax these areas and visualize your breath flowing into and out of the deepest part of your lungs.
After the race or anytime you would like to reduce tension and stress and enter into a calmer state of mind and body, shift into slow, abdominal breathing for a minute or two. Eventually, breathing with your diaphragm instead of your chest will become natural—as natural as breathing.

What's Ortho Postural Dentistry?
What's Ortho Postural Dentistry?
OPD came into being by Dr Ancell stepping outside the field of Dentistry as an observer of what others do to treat their patients.
Many times he would subject himself to those very treatments to gain a better understanding of what was being offered. Coupling this experience with what was happening to his own patients when utilising those modalities in conjunction with often very traditional dental treatments he began to notice patterns that resulted in a new way of providing TMJ unloading, a new way of specifying mandibular position for the airway and new ways of encouraging oro-facial orthopaedic development.

Ortho-postural dentistry starts with the developing infant and growing child. A major aim is to correct aberrant myofunctional habits, establishing an ideal breathing pattern and developing jaw bones to their ideal genetic potential. These functions are critical to the child’s physical, emotional, biochemical and aesthetic development.

Surprising Reasons You Should Smile Every Day II
Smiling helps reduce stress.
In a 2012 study published in the journal Psychological Science, University of Kansas psychological scientists Tara Kraft and Sarah Pressman studied 170 participants who were told to hold chopsticks in their mouths in three formations, making them smile to various degrees without realizing it, after performing a stressful task. The experiment revealed that subjects who smiled the biggest with the chopsticks experienced a substantial reduction in heart rate and quicker stress recovery compared to those whose expressions remained neutral.Smiling makes you more approachable.

Surprising Reasons You Should Smile Every Day
At #woollahradental we've found some facts about smiling and we thought it would be nice to bring some smiles to the New Year.
Whether you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, picked a fight with a loved one or struggled through that morning commute to a job you don't particularly enjoy, it can be a tough task to plaster a smile across your face when you're feeling less than chipper.
But by choosing to smile, happy changes start to occur automatically, both internally and externally. Great power lies in a random smile, so long as you choose to share it with the world.
Here are many reasons why it's worth showing those pearly whites daily -- even when you don't necessarily feel like it.
We will share some of this reasons in our blog posts this month:
While some researchers insist the benefits of smiling can only be rendered from a geniune expression of happiness, others have found that a forced smile can still make you feel happy, even when your existing mood and surroundings suggest otherwise. It only takes smiling for a brief period of time to experience its benefits -- no matter how contrived it feels initially. In this case, maybe it's OK to fake it a little.

Smiling can improve your mood.
Our facial expressions do more than communicate our current mood -- they have the ability to influence our mood as well. Emotions may originate in the brain, but the muscles in the face either reinforce or transform those feelings. Recent studies have revealed that through the enhancement of positive emotions -- or the suppression of negative ones -- with facial expressions, a person's mood begins to align more strongly with the emotion his or her face is communicating.![]() |

Orofacial pain by Dr Tony Ancell
The treatment of chronic pain of the head and neck is a difficult diagnostic puzzle. In an acute injury, the pain is at the site of origin, in a chronic condition however, the brain and body have instigated a variety of compensatory mechanisms that may drastically alter the degree and location of symptoms.
Diagnostic postural balance tests are used to prioritise treatment and identify the origin of the presenting systems, which may involve: muscle pain of the head, neck or back; dizziness or vertigo; migraine; pain in the arms, hands or shoulders; sleep deprivation; swallowing difficulty; and many other symptoms. Treatment involves jaw joint stabilisation using removable pivots or splints and mandibular postural appliances to correct any structural injuries. Referral to other medical and allied health practitioners is required if systems persist for treatment of biochemical, physiological, hormonal or respiratory disorders.
Following jaw joint stabilisation, pain relief and a full range of jaw movements, restorative dentistry is undertaken (if required). This involves protecting compromised heavily restored teeth, improving aesthetics, reconstructing the correct intermeshing of teeth using restorative techniques (crown, bridges, implants or only) orthodontics, orthognathic surgery or cosmetic dentistry.
If you are experiencing pain, please contact us and we will help you find out the origin and options available for you.

How Much Gluten Is Really In Gluten-Free Foods?
Gluten free is not as simple as being free from gluten.
A packet of biscuits or bread may be labelled gluten free, but that doesn't actually mean there's no gluten in it.
In fact a new Australian study has found 14 percent of imported 'gluten-free' foods contain so much gluten that they wouldn't comply in Australia.
University of Western Australia clinical professor Geoff Forbes told The Huffington Post Australia he began paying close attention to gluten when two of his children were diagnosed with coeliac disease -- which causes the immune system to react to gluten.
He said it was not so easy to create a product that's entirely free from gluten.
"So there was a very small amount of gluten in gluten-free products. Over time, the ease with which laboratories can detect gluten has improved. It's now possible to detect it down to three parts per million."
Globally, foods need to have less than 20 parts per million gluten to be considered gluten free, while in Australia, none can detected at all.
Actually I was quite surprised at how good the results were.
Forbes and his team bought 169 imported 'gluten-free' foods from Europe, Asia and America including bread, biscuits, cereals, flours, condiments, pasta, drinks and confectionery. They detected gluten in 24 products, but at very low levels.
"Actually I was quite surprised at how good the results were," he said.
As for which brands did and didn't contain gluten, Forbes said the information was passed on to the regulatory authority and it was their responsibility to deal with the brands.
"There isn't actually a way coeliac patient can find out specifically how much gluten is in a product," he said.
source: Cayla Dengate Associate Editor - The Huffington Post
"In Australia, gluten-free standards were set in 1995 and at that time, 'gluten free' meant no detectable gluten but laboratories could really only detect around 30 parts of gluten per million," Forbes said.
